I love that cotton candy has become a food trend – popping up on pinterest boards, instagram photos, and even on some inventive menus. It’s the perfect cross section of nostalgic and ephemeral. It sticks to your fingers if you hold it too long and dissolves on your tongue instantly. There’s a reason why fairy floss is the perfect name for it – the spun sugar seems to flutter in and then disappear in an instant.
Luckily, this delicious treat is becoming more and more available online – so you don’t have to wait until the county fair to load up. I reached out to lovely Cloe, the owner of Bon Puf, to supply the cotton candy for today’s post. The two flavors in most of the images are pomegranate or strawberry (she also gave me earl grey, which didn’t make it into any photos because I ate it all), and they were gorgeous with these recipes. I use the term “recipe” pretty loosely, because these are more “suggested uses for cotton candy” than anything else. How would you add cotton candy to a recipe you love?
INGREDIENTS (CHAMPAGNE COCKTAILS)
For one cocktail
3 dashes bitters
1/2 ounces lime or lemon juice
1 handful cotton candy
Champagne or Sparkling Wine to taste
DIRECTIONS
In the bottom of a champagne coupe, combine bitters and citrus juice in the bottom. Float the cotton candy on top (try to have it touch the liquid in the glass as little as possible, as liquid will make it immediately dissolve). Drizzle champagne over it to serve.
INGREDIENTS (AFFOGATO)
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
1 handful cotton candy
1 shot espresso
DIRECTIONS
Top the scoop of vanilla ice cream with cotton candy, and drizzle the espresso over it to enjoy.
INGREDIENTS (DOUGHNUT ICE CREAM SANDWICHES)
1 doughnut
1 scoop ice cream
1 handful cotton candy
DIRECTIONS
Slice the doughnut in half, and top the bottom half with ice cream. Top with cotton candy, gently sandwich with top layer, and enjoy.
INGREDIENTS (CAKE TOPPERS)
1 finished cake
1 handful cotton candy
DIRECTIONS
Place cotton candy on top of the cake, pulling up the ends to make it fluffy. Slice and serve!
