Creating the perfect guest experience is as simple as putting yourself in their place. What do you like when you stay at a hotel or at a friend’s home? What makes you feel welcome? For me, so much of it is the feeling that I have my own space, and that I’m comfortable in it. So the first step for a great guest experience is to have a great guest bed.
For the kid’s room in the cabin, we used Saatva’s memory foam line, Loom & Leaf. Not only are they super supportive, but they’re cooling as well – which is perfect for my son who inherited his dad’s furnace-like sleeping temperature. The Loom & Leaf memory foam is made wit breathable, organic cotton covering and natural thistle flame retardant keep you comfortable, cool and safe. Their proprietary Spinal Zone Gel layer is created with cooling gel so you stay cool with optimal spinal support. The dual layer eco-friendly support foam with breathable airflow channels provides a cool, supportive night’s sleep. I wanted to maximize the amount of space, so I used a bunk + trundle full bed that could comfortably fit adults as well as children. I topped the beds with Organic Checked Sheets from Pottery Barn Kids and added some incredibly soft alpaca teddy bears from The Little Market to make them feel more inviting and cozy. I wanted the room to be kid friendly but adult appropriate – so I kept the color palette neutral and chose pieces that would work for any guest, like this cute night stand, modern book shelf, and minimalistic reading lights, the Stella Sconce by Mitzi. I love the shaggy baskets, and ended up using them for indoor plants as well as organization. The Justina Blakeney wall hanging adds a happy pop of texture on the wall, and the Shade Store x Pendleton Drapes add another level of color and texture.
In the other guest room, where my parents will stay for big family weekends, we went with the Saatva Classic Mattress on the Lineal adjustable base. It’s the perfect “goldilocks” mattress. My parents slept on a Japanese futon for most of my childhood, so I know they love a firm, supportive mattress. Individually wrapped coils respond and contour to every body shape while lumbar support comes from a high quality memory foam layer, providing additional pressure relief while helping reduce stress and tension from the lower back (an answer to my constantly tight and sore Husband’s prayers!). Saatva’s Classic innerspring mattresses are built with a tempered steel support lower coil base, creating a long lasting, sustainable mattress with increased durability and is the best design to prevent sagging. The euro pillow top is incredibly luxurious and soft while their Guardin® botanical antimicrobial fabric treatment inhibits bacteria to prolong the life of the organic cotton fabric. The lineal base is perfect for my mom, who loves to do her morning reading from bed, and can now raise her angle at the push of a button. On top of this bed, I used Parachute Linen bedding in Toast. I’m usually a white bedding girl, but I love what the warmth of the bedding brings to the room. Instead of doing a classic headboard, I chose to hang a vintage Navajo rug above the bed. It adds such a fabulous pop of color and really becomes the centerpiece of the room.
The bedrooms are mirror images of each other, so I included the same modern bookcase by West Elm, but styled it with more grown up pieces. I also repeated the Shade Store x Pendleton Drapery and hardware here, removing the mirrored doors. It makes the room feel immediately larger and more inviting.
Both rooms have plenty of storage, reading lights, a least two pillows per person and a carafe of water and glass on the night stand – all of my essentials when I’m staying away from home. I also have a mini fan for each room, in case a guest needs more air circulation on a warm night.
For the Bathroom I put in a giant soaking tub by American Standard with Grohe fixtures, including a rain shower head. I’m actually not much of a bath person, but I wanted to make the bath a total retreat – like a personal spa. The soothing color palette from Fireclay Tile plus little touches from The Little Market really set the tone. To really put it over the top, I made sure to include my favorite skincare and haircare products by True Botanicals and Parachute Home. The little bath tub tray has a lovely candle, matches, bath salts, even a little notch to put your glass of wine – everything you need for a long, luxurious bath. An abundance of fluffy towels is a must for guests! So I went with the softest, most absorbent ones by Parachute. The large vanity has plenty of storage and beautiful Semi Handmade walnut covers, connecting the modern bathroom to the wood textures throughout the cabin.
Beyond the bedrooms and bath, I always make sure to have plenty of coffee and tea, plus a simply stocked pantry ready for them to enjoy. A hand written note doesn’t hurt either.
